2027 Shirakawa-go Winter Illumination Guide

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Shirakawa-go: Experience the magical sight of UNESCO-recognized traditional farmhouses, blanketed in snow and glowing beautifully under the winter night sky. 
  • Best Time to Visit: Year Round, Winter & Autumn
  • Busiest: Winter and autumn, Obon, New Year, Golden Week Holidays and long weekends, Winter illumination
  • Highlights: Traditional houses, viewing deck, local food/snacks, winter scenery, autumn foliage
  • Winter Illumination 2027: See the fairy tale-like winter scenery from the 1) ground and/or from the 2) observatory. If you’re lucky, you can experience actual snowfall while enjoying the unique village tour.
  • Schedule:
    • January 11 (Monday, National Holiday)
    • January 17 (Sunday)
    • January 24 (Sunday)
    • January 31 (Sunday)
  • Time: 17:30 – 19:30 

IMPORTANT! This event is EXCLUSIVE and requires ADVANCE RESERVATION. Same-Day admission is NOT ALLOWED. Day-time visit is ALLOWED but time restriction applies.

HOW TO SEE THE WINTER ILLUMINATION

1. Stay Overnight in Shirakawa-go

Reservation by Lottery (see Official Website for updates)

  • This is the most convenient way to see the event. Due to the limited accommodation in the village, a lottery-based reservation system has been implemented recently.
  • To avail of this option, you must join a reservation LOTTERY. One Person, One Application basis. Application will be from October 1, 13:00 to October 31, 23:59. Application must be submitted by email. Winners will be informed by E-mail on November 10, 2026. If you win, you must book by credit card within the given time. 
  • Accommodation Package: If lucky, you can avail of overnight stay at one of the accommodations, parking space and EXCLUSIVE ACCESS to the Observatory (viewing deck).
  • Due to demand, package rates are a bit expensive during this time. Hotel bookings for this event are exclusive at the official website and may not be available from third party sites like Agoda or Klook.

NOTE: If joining the lottery, it is important to be mindful of the timing and schedule and always check your emails or contact for any updates or correspondence from organizers. Also ready your credit cards and personal information as needed. A fast and stable internet connection is recommended when accessing the reservation website. If you win the lottery and decline to confirm, additional slots will be opened. 

2. By Local Tour Bus Package

Reservation directly via Bus Website

  • This is another convenient but cheaper way to see the event. Local bus operators around Tokai and Hokuriku regions like  Nohi Bus, Kaetsuno Bus, Hokutetsu Bus, Toyama Chiho and Iruka Kotsu offer this Special Event package. 
  • Bookings are available directly on their websites. Check them regularly for timely updates. Due to the limited seats, early reservation is suggested.
  • Bus Package Option 1 (WITH OBSERVATORY Admission): You have EXCLUSIVE ACCESS to the Shiroyama Observatory (viewing deck) and ground tour.
  • Bus Package Option 2 (WITHOUT OBSERVATORY Admission): You can enjoy the light-up of illuminated houses from the ground.

3. By Private Car

Direct Reservation (see Official Website for updates)

  • This is a convenient option for those with car rental or private cars. This allows you to reserve  a parking space during the event and access around the village. Note that you cannot access the Observatory for this option.
  • There are usually two rounds of bookings: September 10 and December 1. Bookings are available directly on the village website. 
  • Car Package (WITHOUT OBSERVATORY VIEW Access): You can enjoy the illumination with a reserved parking (Midashima Parking Lot) and entry for a required number of passengers per car. 
  • Rates: 6,000 to 9,000 yen per car (for September 10 bookings)

 7,000 to 10,000 yen per (for December 1 bookings)

  • Check regularly for schedule and timely updates. Due to the limited parking spaces, this option sells out quickly.
  • During this event, cars going to Shirakawago are required to have winter tires. Extreme caution is advised when driving under snowy conditions since Shirakawago is a heavy snow area. During heavy snow, tire checks are put up along expressways.

4. By Taxi (with parking reservation)

  • This is a convenient option for those without personal cars. This allows you to avail of taxi service with a reserved  parking space during the event. Note that you cannot access the Observatory for this option.
  • For this option, you must reserve a parking space before you can arrange a taxi for the event. No drop offs or pickups.
  • During this event, cars (including taxis) going to Shirakawago are required to have winter tires. Extreme caution is advised when driving under snowy conditions since Shirakawago is a heavy snow area. During heavy snow, tire checks are put up along expressways. 

5. By Travel Agencies/Tour Operators

Direct Reservation with Agencies (see Official Website for updates)

  • This is a last minute option for those who were not able to secure accommodation, bus tour or parking tickets. This ticket has No Observatory Admission. 
  • This option is offered by authorized travel agencies or bus operators. In previous years, some tours were offered via Willer Bus or via Klook. IMPORTANT TIPS

  • JR Pass
    • This route is covered by the JR Takayama Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass. This is the most economical among all the JR passes since it covers trains and the buses along the route from Nagoya to Osaka via Takayama, Toyama and Kanazawa.
    • It is recommended to book train tickets and buses especially during peak seasons [autumn, winter and cherry blossoms] and long holidays [Obon, Golden Week, New Year]. For JR Passes, reservations for reserved buses are via PHONE.Some bus routes have non-reserved trips. Bookings can be done up one month before the schedule.
    • Winter Illumination Events: Use of JR train/bus passes applies only to regular buses to/from Shirakawa-go for Day Tours ONLY. All day-time visitors without Illumination Tickets are restricted from staying in the village beyond the time limit. Make sure to come early as there is a cut-off or Tour Groups and private cars.
  • Bus Schedule (Applicable only for Day Tours)
    • Confirm with the official websites for the updated schedule/timetables and updates for your destination.
    • During peak season, it is recommended to book in advance.
    • Please note the terms and rules on luggage. Luggage storage is available at Shirakawago Bus Terminal.  
  • Hotels
    • Book any hotels of your preference and budget NEAR train stations in Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, or Kanazawa. This allows convenient transfers and you can also leave your luggage before or after check-in.  
    • Staying in Shirakwago village is a unique experience but rates may be higher than other hotels. During Winter Illumination, reservations are by lottery.
